Committee rally tidal pool support in Mablethorpe

The concept of a public swimming pool has escaped the clutches of Mablethorpe for years - but would a tidal pool now be the town's best option?

The idea of a tidal pool has been thrown around the coast for many years - but a new committee, ‘Making Waves’, has recently been formed, determined to tackle the idea head on and try to make the dream a reality.

A tidal pool is a safe area for youngsters to be able to swim and play in sea water which comes in from the main tide.

It enables users to not be dragged into the sea’s current and the water remains in the structure when the tide goes out and can be used all year round.

Chair of the ‘Making Waves’ committee, Sam Ramsden said: “The tidal pool idea has never stopped.

“The background research has took up a lot of time and I wasn’t able to spend as much time on it as I would have liked due to work commitments.

“But this year I have put together a group called Making Waves.

“We now have a full committee and are working really hard on this proposed project for the area.”

Committee members have recently been in the process of gathering local support for the idea and the next stage is to now present their idea to the town council.

Ms Ramsden added: “UWe are working on a presentation for the town council, which we are aiming to present to them in June hopefully.”

The project is still very much in the beginning stages and would need financial support as well as planning permission.

“There is still a long way to go and the project is still in its infancy.

“We don’t yet know if the Environment Agency or council will allow us to build, but we have many councillors who are liking the idea and a few who are helping us.

“We are also looking into ways in which the project could be funded and we are welcoming any feedback on this idea from local residents.”

When the Leader asked local County Councillor, Anne Reynolds if she would support such a project, she gives us her thumbs up.

She said: “I would welcome any new facility to the area, including a tidal pool, for Mablethorpe.

“I would be happy to support any group looking into the possibility of such a venture.”

The project also has a Facebook page, ‘Mablethorpe Tidal Pool Project’ which has nearly 2,000 followers to date and keeps local up to date with progress.
