LEISURE RIDE - A wet day did not stop four riders from enjoying a 102-mile ride taking in a long stretch of the Trans-Pennine Trail. Daniel Nicholson and Trevor Halstead, Seain Johnson and Loll Dickenson rode though Beckingham, Gringley-on-the-Hill, Wiseton, Mattersey, Ranskill, Serlby Park, Styrup, Stainton, Braithwell, Micklebring, Rawmarsh and Brampton. The Trans-Pennine Trail is a multi-user trail stretching the breadth of Northern England. Joining it at Bramton, the riders made their way to Doncaster before leaving the trail and heading to Bawtry At this point Seain returned home as the main group made a refreshment stop before returning home riding through Misson, Misterton, Walkeringham and Beckingham returning to Gainsborough along the riverside. It had been a fantastic ride though some magnificent countryside riding along disused railway lines and also alongside the River Don. Next Sunday (June 3) is Trevor’s birthday ride which includes a morning break at Tuxford Windmill, with lunch at the Major Oak Visitors Centre, Edwinstowe. There will also be a visit to Robin Hood’s Tree before riding home through Clumber Park. Meet Roseway, Gainsborough, 8.20am for a 65-mile ride. For more information contact Trevor Halstead at Church Street Cycles, 102-104 Church Street, Gainsborough, or telephone 01427 61775 or home 01427 677396.

PROBUS CLUB - The latest meeting of the club in the Old Hall started on a sombre note when chairman Alan Bickerton informed everyone of the death of member Charles Hudson. Alan then went on to introduce members Derrick Pearson and Peter Rushden who spoke about their experiences as members of the ambulance service which proved very interesting and sometimes amusing. They also presented many photographs of the service vehicles of days gone by. Alan thanked them both and before the close announced there would be no meeting on the next Monday owing to the bank holiday but the following week Maurice Brunton would present a DVD entitled The Yukon Trail.

The snowball letter W was not won, so that prize now stands at 125.

Glentham

PARISH COUNCIL - Glentham Parish Council held its annual meeting in the village hall on Thursday May 10 when Coun G. Wiseman was elected chairman and Coun G. Fox vice-chairman. Mr John Summers was welcomed as a new member. The council is still trying to find funding for a mechanical clock winding mechanism, having received quotes of around 3,500 for its installation. County Coun Lewis Strange is working hard to get a Speed Indicator Detector for the A631 through the village. This has proved effective in other villages. A meeting with the Road Safety Partnership and county councillors is to be arranged. The Parish Plan Steering Group is in full flight, organising events and working extremely hard on this valuable project. Thanks go to all members of this group (and their partners) for all their efforts. Their next venture is to be a hog roast. Coun D. Wiseman reported that the village hall committee will be holding its annual meeting soon. The funding application for the new hall has been submitted. The two village notice boards had deteriorated. The locks were rusted and the one on the High Street was practically useless. The new boards look smart, having been repainted, and had new backing inserts and new locks added. The council decided to try monthly meetings for the next year. There are many reasons for this: more paperwork arrives daily and planning applications can always be considered at full meetings. The meetings will be held on the second Thursday in the month starting at 7.30pm, and the next one will be on Thursday June 14. The council’s books are at present being internally audited before submission to the external auditor, Moore Stephens. Currently the council has 15,878.68 in hand. 3,100 of this is Parish Plan grant money to be spent on the projects which benefit the community enormously. Another sum has been set aside for the village hall, a building without which the community would be bereft. The council was granted 333 from the Councillor Initiative Fund (thanks go to Coun Jeff Summers) which has been spent on a bingo machine for the 55 Club and some play equipment for the Mother and Toddler Group.

LIBRARY CALLS - The mobile library will be at Glentham Village hall car park on Tuesday June 12 from 11.30am to 11.40am.

WELCOME CLUB met last Wednesday with Gwen Bingham in the chair. During the business part of the meeting it was announced that the money for the outing in July was now due. The chairman then introduced the speaker, the Rev Keith Lackenby, who gave a very interesting talk on medical ethics. Two years ago he was made chairman of Research Ethics and he spoke of the notes about a patient being private and not for public use. He also told of the research that is done before a new drug comes on to the market. Mrs Bingham thanked him for a very interesting talk. Hostesses at the next meeting will be Mrs Wright and Mrs Arrand. After a break for refreshments everyone enjoyed a few games of bingo with Mick Hart the caller. The next meeting will be a games afternoon.

18thC PARISH DOCUMENTS ON VIEW - Original 18th century Parish Award documents - detailing the parish enclosures - are available to view at The Misterton Centre. The enclosures signalled the end of the ancient strip farming system; in Nottinghamshire, just Laxton survives as an example of strip farming. The parchment documents will be placed in the county archives but are available to residents to view up until the end of June. Call The Misterton Centre on 891872 to make an appointment.

READING GROUP ASSESSES ORANGE SHORTLIST - The Library’s Reading Group will be going to Retford Library for the Orange Prize for Fiction evening. The six shortlisted books, which can be ordered from the Library, will be championed by librarians - then Reading Group members across Bassetlaw will vote on their favourites. The Orange evening is on Wednesday June 6 at 7.15pm. Others are welcome to join - call the library on 890646 for further details and to book a place.

JUDGING FOR BEST KEPT VILLAGE - Residents are reminded of their responsibility to keep their premises in good order, with verges cut and gutters weeded, up to the middle of the road outside their property (for most roads but not on many estates). But householders do not have to fill potholes and take on street cleaning! This, hopefully, clarifies questions about householders’ responsibilities for the forthcoming judging in the Best Kept Village Competition. Elderly residents, with no other means of assistance, should contact the Parish Council on 891872 to see if help can be made available.

DIARY DATES - Saturday June 2: Star vocal harmony girl duo, Larger than Life, Misterton Sports Social Club, 9pm. Sunday June 3: Holy Communion, All Saints’ Church, 9am.
