Could 25-year-old plan to extend M11 near Boston boost the area's business?

Business leaders in Boston are praising a plan to extend the M11 through Lincolnshire, including past the town, which was first mooted 25 years ago.

Jenny Elwick of the Boston Town Team said that if the road was to be extended as had been planned via Market Rasen, Coningsby, between Boston and Swineshead, down to Holbeach and Sutton Bridge and further, it would be ‘amazing’.

She told The Standard: “It’s an exciting thought and would bring many opportunities into Boston. It would give us a direct link to London and across the North.

“It would help boost the local economy which is built on the production of fresh vegetables, road haulage and logistics.”

She pointed to the fact the Port of Boston handles one million tonnes of cargo each year.

“This road would enable our products to reach their destinations far quicker than they are able to currently,” she added.

However, Coun Colin Davie, the executive councillor for economic development for Lincolnshire County Council said he would need to consider very carefully if a motorway through Lincolnshire ‘would be the best use of any funds available’.

He said: “It may be better spent on improving key strategic routes through the county such as the A15 and A17, as well as other roads in the south of Lincolnshire. There could be an opportunity to invest in our existing infrastructure, and help traffic flow better for residents, visitors and businesses.”

Mrs Elwick said the plans were set to be taken to the board of the town team at its next meeting where a decision will be taken whether to follow up on the plans.
