The council, which grants the licence to operate rides on the town’s beach, confirmed it has received six complaints about the alleged poor condition of the donkeys.

ELDC’s Principal Licensing Officer, Adrian Twiddy, said: “The council is aware of the alleged welfare concerns in respect of the beach donkeys at Mablethorpe and is currently investigating the issues that have been raised.”

It is understood the investigation was launched after people posted photographs of the donkeys on social media.

An official Facebook site has also been set up, called ‘The condition of Mablethorpe beach donkeys.’

A resident has launched a petition, urging the RSPCA to take action.

The petition - apparently organised by a Market Rasen woman - has collected over 2,700 signatures.

The rides are popular attraction at the resort, particularly during the school summer holidays.

No further details are available.
