Council look to keep roads open through cold snap

WITH weather forecasters predicting the onset of more wintry conditions for the rest of January, Notts County Council is reassuring residents that it is well-prepared.

The council has benefited from the recent relatively mild weather – and the fact that it began planning for this winter as soon as the last one finished.

It has the capacity to store 22,000 tonnes of salt, which is 12,000 tonnes more than the absolute minimum recommended by the government and enough for all but the most severe winters.

And the council’s gritting teams are already on full 24/7 standby – ready to grit the county’s main routes once temperatures plummet.

“We are determined to keep our county on the move this winter,” said coun Richard Jackson, cabinet member for transport and highways.
