Country fun at Ulley Park

Ulley Country Park welcomed countless visitors on Saturday when they held their successful Country Fair.

It’s the third year the Friends of Ulley have organised, planned and put on the event which proved a roaring success with countless visitors in attendance.

“It was a wonderful day and a terrific turn-out,” said Friends’ secretary, Barbara Littlewood. “The weather was lovely and so we we were very busy all day.”

There was plenty on offer to keep visitors amused and entertained with stalls, fundraising games and activities from tombolas to raffles to colouring contests.

“The Mayor of Rotherham stopped by and enjoyed lunch with us in our refreshment tent which was constantly busy and the team worked very hard serving countless cups of tea and serving cakes,” added Barbara.

Rotherham Town Brass Band performed at intervals throughout the day and repreentatives from South Yorkshire Badger Group, Rotherham Hospice, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, Bee Keepers and the Neighbourhood Police all had stalls to raise awareness to their cause and collect contributions to their funds.

Woodland Crafts demonstrated traditional methods of charcoal burning and pole lathing while the RSPB held children’s activities.

“And the pond dipping proved really popular with Ranger Claire down at the Old Mess Hut where youngsters could find out what lives in the pond.”

The Friends of Ulley Country Park are a group of volunteers who work to improve the facilities at the attraction through fundraising and applying for grants.

Money from this event will go towards their current initiative which includes improving the toilets and kitchen area.

“On the third Sunday of each month from 11am-3pm the Friends run a Cafe Day offering visitors refreshments,” added Margaret. “This helps us with our continued fundraising.”
