Creative activities on offer for adults with a learning disability

The ‘Do Something Different’ project provides sport and leisure activities for adults over 16 years-old with a learning or physical disability but there was a gap for art and cultural activities for adults with a learning disability.

The Museum and 20-21 decided to join forces to apply for funding to offer a wider range of activities for these adults as part of ‘Do Something Different’.

They applied for funding last year (April 2014) from the Learning Disability Partnership Board and were successful in receiving over £8,000 for a one-year project.

The first half of the project was very successful with 441 people taking part in art and cultural activities.

The Museum and 20-21 are now launching the second part of the project that will be on offer until April 2015.

There are a wide variety of activities now on offer including:

Craft workshops at 20-21 every Wednesday during term time from 1pm to 4pm. These are free and there is no need to book.

There will also be specialist artist sessions at 20-21 from 1pm to 4pm: silk painting workshop with Yara Sekiguchi on Wednesday 11 February; ceramic workshop with Karen Raithby on Wednesday 25 February; and painting workshop with Dominic Heffer on Wednesday 11 March. Artist workshops at North Lincolnshire Museum. On Monday 26 January from 10am to 12pm make your own mask with artist Steve Elliott. On Tuesday 10 February from 1pm to 3pm make pottery with artist Marilyn Oliver. These cost £3 person. To book a place on either workshop call Jo Collis on 01724 843533.

Hands-on sessions at North Lincolnshire Museum on Monday 23 March from 10am to 11am. Spring themed session with object handling, craft activities and games. This is free to attend and there is no need to book.

Dance sessions at The Pods every Friday until 6 March 2015. It’s from 2.15pm to 3.15pm. The sessions cost £2 per person and there is no need to book.

As the project already provided sport and leisure activities we wanted to extend that with art and cultural sessions, so that they had even more choice. These sessions were extremely popular last year and I’m sure it will be just as popular this year with the variety of activities on offer. Not only are these activities enjoyable they are a great way for participants to socialise and meet new people. Have a go at the different activities and see which your favourite is.”
