Ms Atkins said she had spent much of the lockdown at her constituency home and was aware of several incidents of ASB in Horncastle.

She said it was understandable if people had concerns but confirmed no-one had actually contacted her office to raise any specific issues.

She said: “No-one should have to live with anti social behaviour - no matter what level it occurs.

“It is not acceptable - it is not fair as it is often the most vulnerable members of our communities that are targeted.

“I have read the reports but it is important to stress Horncastle is still one of the safest places in the county.”

Ms Atkins said it was important to recognise the extra burden placed on police during the lockdown.

She said: “What has happened in recent weeks is unprecedented.

“The police have had to cope with a lot of changes but taking everything into account, I think they have done a fantastic job.”

Ms Atkins added she had a very positive relationship with Lincolnshire Police - and Inspector Sarah Constantine who heads the Wolds Division.

The MP said: “I know how hard she and her officers are working to tackle crime and of course, having to deal with Covid-19 has put even more pressure on them.”

Ms Atkins believes the fight against crime is ‘not ‘just down to police’ but involves other agencies, including councils and housing associations.

She also said it was important people reported crimes as police could ‘not be everywhere, all of the time.’

Ms Atkins again stressed she - and other Lincolnshire MPs - are continuing to press for more funding for the county force.

She confirmed she had regular meetings with other government ministers about the issue.

The force is currently recruiting officers but there are still concerns about resources, especially in rural communities and at night.

Ms Atkins said: “The way all police forces are being funded is being looked at and we (MPs)are always making a strong case for Lincolnshire.

“The Prime Minister did make extra money available and that has led to the (current) recruitment of more officers.

“I appreciate everyone would like to see even more officers but then every part of the country could make its own case for that.”

Ms Atkins added the government is continually reviewing legislation. As a Home Office minister, she is often at the heart of any new initiatives.

During lockdown, Ms Atkins explained the way officers had to approach what would normally be routine jobs had changed - because of social distancing.

She also pointed out in the opening weeks of lockdown, many officers had been assigned to new rules and regulations.

She praised officers for the way they had responded to the challenge.
