The jewellery was later identified by a Mr Melko as having been stolen from his car while it was being serviced at Zeijers’ brother’s garage.

Zeijers was arrested and admitted stealing the jewellery. Mr Clare said the jewellery was of ‘great sentimental value’ to Mr Melko as it had been a gift from his brother, who had since died.

Zeijers, who was not represented but has no previous convictions, told the magistrates he had nothing further to say.

He was fined £270, ordered to pay £225 compensation to Cash Generators and £85 in court costs.
