The incident at The Lincolnshire Otter in Somerby Way, Gainsborough, happened on July 19, and it had only re-opened to customers on July 16.

A spokesman from Lincolnshire Police said: “This was an overnight burglary at the Lincolnshire Otter.

"We believe the offence took place in the early hours of July 19, where the offender gained access to the premises.

"It is not believed anything was taken.”

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the police on the non emergency number, 101, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The break-in meant the pub had to close for the morning, a day after it launched its breakfast menu.

A statement on the pub’s Facebook page said: “Unfortunately we will not be opening for our planned breakfast.

"We had an attempted burglary and officers are on site, we also have some cleaning up to do.”

It did not set them back though and they were able to open later that same day.

People also took to the pub’s Facebook page to express their disappointment over the incident.

Jess Fenwick said: “How awful, hope it wasn't too bad.”

Julie Holt said: “OMG, that’s disgusting. You would think people would be happy you are open again without trying to ruin it.”

Jackie Bowyer said: “Disgusting. We were there for a meal last night.

"Everywhere was so well thought out and staff and food was brilliant.

"What a set back for you. Hope you get sorted quickly.”

The Lincolnshire Otter has signed up to be part of the Eat Out to Help Out Government Scheme.

Until August 31, diners will get a 50 per cent discount on food and non-alcoholic drinks (a maximum of £10 per person).

It will apply for every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday during the month, in a bid to encourage the economy to flourish after months of lockdown and help drum up custom on quieter days of the week and means businesses can start to build back up.

It is hoped the scheme will incentivise customers to eat in restaurants or other eating establishments.
