Vincent McCaffrey, 26, of Eastcliffe Square, Caythorpe, was jailed for nine months and was also banned from driving for 18 months which will start from when he is released from custody after he admitted three charges of doing an act intended to pervert the course of justice.

McCaffrey was driving a hire car on February 13, 2015 when he was caught out by a camera at Barrowby Thornes near Grantham while driving north on the A1.

David Allan, prosecuting, said that four days later McCaffrey was driving the same vehicle when he activated another camera on the A52 near Grantham.

And he was clocked for a third time on February 23 of the same year again on the A52.

Mr Allan said that when McCaffrey was asked by police to provide the name of the driver he claimed that a man named Paul Smith was behind the wheel on each occasion.

McCaffrey claimed on the first two occasions that Mr Smith lived at an address in Sleaford and on the final occasion said the man lived in Grantham.

But police checked out the addresses and discovered that no-one called Paul Smith had any connection with either property.

Judge John Pini QC, passing sentence, told him: “The courts have to deal with these offences by immediate custodial sentences.”

Chris Milligan, defending, said that McCaffrey has mental health problems.

“He lives in a rural location. His wife does not drive and they have four small children. The people who will suffer as a result of his foolishness are his children and his wife.

“He is very sorry. He should not have done it and he has learned his lesson.”
