The item was unearthed by a member of the public on Monday and reported to police just before 2pm, according to a Lincolnshire Police spokesman.

Police officers and a bomb disposal unit responded to the call.

The spokesman said: “A cordon surrounding the area was put in place and a controlled explosion was carried out on Tuesday afternoon in Harmston.”

It was said to have been an airdrop practice shell.
