Council call to report crimes after spate of burglaries across Skegness

Mayor of Skegness Coun Mark Dannatt said the help of members of the public was vital in the fight against crime. He said: "After all the recent thefts and attempts to gain entry to properties in the surrounding areas, I need you to do something for me and that is to report these crimes to Lincolnshire Police.

"We all know it's appalling with the street lights not being on, which I am totally against and will keep fighting to get these reinstated.

"But we need to report these things and get the data recorded by Lincolnshire Police so we can challenge those in charge to get the lights switched on and ensure we have enough officers to patrol our streets."

On Thursday, a 27-year-old Skegness man appeared before Lincoln Magistrates Court, charged with 13 crimes across town.

Shane Simpson, of Wellington Way, is alleged to have been involved in a number of incidents in March and April this year.

Locations of the burglary and thefts are:

Winston Drive; two counts at different addresses in Mulberry Way; two counts at different addresses in Churchill Avenue; Buckminster Drive, The Meadows, Clarke Way, Talbot Road, and Harrow Road.

Attempted burglaries with intent are alleged to have been committed at addresses in Blyton Road; and two counts at Wickenby Way.

Items taken during these burglaries included electrical items including laptops and mobile phones, game consoles, jewelry, and a handbag.

At the beginning of lockdown, the community was shocked when the Standard reported the £5,000 theft of fashions from Alison's store in High Street in which burglars used a sledgehammer to gain entry.

Lincolnshire Police confirmed two people were believed to have been involved, and one was arrested and released on bail.

The haul included Wrangler and Mismash jeans and Ellesse t-shirts. This incident was followed by two further attempts and the stick has now been removed.

Naseer Iqbal, whose family run the business, said it was disappointing the burglary happened while businesses were closed during the lockdown, especially coming up to what should have been one of the busiest weekends at the start of the season.

"We hope the police will catch whoever is responsible but they are under tremendous pressure at this time," he said.

"These are difficult times. We just have to get through it as best we can."

Images were also released on social media at the beginning of April of an attempted burglary at Skegness Pleasure beach. Mitchell Powley, general manager, said: "There is nothing really in there but we do get people trying all the time. The site is patrolled by security."
