Man arrested after Gainsborough bomb scare

A man has been arrested after a causing a bomb scare in a Gainsborough pharmacy last week.

The man, in his 20s, was arrested following a major incident at the Co-op pharmacy on Market Street on Friday, August 28, which saw the road sealed off by police for more almost two hours.

Police were called to the pharmacy after staff received a call from a man just before 11.30am who said he had placed a bomb in the premises.

Police cordoned off a street and the pharmacy was was evacuated while a thorough search of the site was carried out.

However, by 1.25pm, police concluded there was no explosive device on the site and the cordon was lifted.

In a statedment, a Lincolnshire Police spokesman said: "We received a call at 11.14 am today (August 28) from a shop at Market Street, Gainsborough, reporting that a man had called and said he had placed a bomb in the store.

"Officers attended and the shop was evacuated so the shop could be searched. Market Street was closed at around 11.30am during the incident.

"Following a search, officers were satisfied that the call was a hoax and the cordon was lifted at around 1.25pm.

"A man in his late 20s has been arrested and is in police custody.

"We will release more details when they are available."

A number of nearby businesses were also closed while police carried out their searches.

The Lincolnshire Co-op confirmed that its Gainsborough Market Street pharmacy and nearby post office had been closed while the search was carried out.

A Co-op spokesman said: "Our pharmacy and nearby post office were closed today for a time due to an incident."

Owners and customers from nearby and surrounding businesses were aware the incident was a bomb scare but the police cordon ensured everyone was kept well away from the scene.
