Man jailed for dangerous driving in Boston, a week after appearing in court for £399 watch theft

A man has been handed a 24-week prison sentence for dangerous driving in Boston, a week after he appeared in court for stealing a £399 watch from a shop in town.
William Smith, 36, of no fixed abode, appeared at Lincoln Magistrates’ Court on Saturday (November 29), charged with driving a motor vehicle dangerously in John Adams Way the previous day. After indicating a guilty plea, he was given a 24-week prison sentence and banned from the road for 18 months. He was also ordered to pay £85 costs. Yesterday, police provided some detail to the case, saying the red lights were in the Market Place.
A spokesman said: “On Friday, November 28, we received reports of a man selling unknown items from the boot of his blue Toyota Aygo. “A PCSO attempted to speak with the man, but he drove off, through a set of red traffic lights in the direction of Skirbeck Road. “As the driver approached a marked police car, the officer behind the wheel illuminated the blue lights to alert the driver to stop the vehicle. The driver disregarded this and continued to accelerate.” Smith would go on to be arrested in Valentine Close later that day, Boston, police said. A charge of failure to stop when required by a constable in uniform from the same date was withdrawn, according to court documents. Smith had been at the same court on the previous Friday (November 21) on a separate matter. This related to the theft of a £399 Bulova watch from a jewellers in the town on the previous day. Police said Smith tried on the watch with the assistance of staff, then ran out of the shop, making no attempt to pay. On his November 21 court appearance, Smith also faced a charge of being in possession of heroin – a class A drug – in Mayflower Road, Boston, on October 14. After indicating guilty pleas to both offences, Smith was ordered to pay £399 in compensation and also received a Community Order, comprising a six-month drug rehabilitation requirement (non-residential) and a rehabilitation activity requirement (up to 15 days). It was also ordered that the heroin be forfeited and destroyed.
