Prosecuting, Dale Brownless said the woman in the case had pulled into the offside lane in John Adams Way on July 20 last year, to allow an ambulance to get through.

He said she then continued her journey but was overtaken by Stansfield, who had been driving the car behind her, who stopped in the middle of the road in front of her, forcing her to stop.

Mr Brownless said Stansfield was in a rage and went to the window of the victim's car and smashed it with his fist.

The victim did not get out of the car.

Mr Browless said Stansfield claimed he had not intended to smash the window during an interview after the offence.

The magistrates found the case proved in the absence of Stansfield and convicted him on the charge of criminal damage.

They issued an arrest warrant for him to attend so they could consider whether a custodial or community penalty would be appropriate.
