Nick Edwards, 25, of West Road, Pointon, admitted two counts of assaulting a woman by beating at Victoria Place in Bourne, on April 29 and between March 1 and April 24.

Prosecuting, Daniel Pietryka said that on April 29 at 7.30pm a neighbour overheard arguing and was concerned about what was happening next door. Mr Pietryka said the victim told police that Edwards had strangled her to the point where she could not breathe. She also said he had smashed her head against a wall and hit her head with a mirror.

In a police interview, Edwards admitted he had ‘lost it’ but denied causing marks to her cheek and injuries to her lip. He said he had been suffering from depression.

Defending, Sonia Bhalla said Edwards admitted squeezing the victim’s throat on both occasions, but had sustained injuries to her lip and cheek when running away from him and tripping on the stairs.

Miss Bhalla said Edwards had lost his job as a result. She added: “He was not coping and took it out on his partner. He recognises the error of his ways. He is extremely sorry.”

Magistrates on Monday handed Edwards a 24-month community order to include a 20-day rehabilitation requirement, taking part in a Building Better Relationships programme, and undertaking 50 hours of unpaid work. He was ordered to pay £40 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.
