Witnesses called the police at 12.30pm yesterday (Tuesday) when they saw the men getting out of the truck near the church in Cranwell village before walking off in different directions.

A Lincolnshire Police spokesman said: “We will now hold them and handle their welfare needs until the Home Office arrange a transfer to an immigration centre.”

One resident posted on Facebook that he had been informed by a neighbour of the immigrants’ release in the village. He said police were telling people to shut doors and windows.

another resident saw four with police on the A15 and two in a garden of a house near the church, while another local said he was driving out of Cranwell to Sleaford and had to drive around two Somalian/Eritrean/Ethiopian looking men walking in the road from the village heading towards the A15.

Another person urged compassion for the ‘desperate’ travellers.
