Police launch investigation following discovery of Lincolnshire sailor’s body after Queen’s celebrations in the Seychelles

The investigation is under way following the death of engineering technician Charles Warrender, who is from North Thoresby.

The 24-year-old was serving on board Portsmouth-based Type 23 frigate HMS Richmond during her visit in the Indian Ocean.

His body was discovered in Victoria behind the National Library, at a former children’s playground at 6.45am on Saturday.

ETME Warrender was wearing a light-blue shirt and blue jeans at the time of death, according to reports in local newspaper Today in Seychelles.

When he was found he was barefoot with his shoes and socks placed next to him.

Seychelles police say that there was no ‘visual’ evidence that foul play was involved, but the death is being treated as suspicious.

Matthew Harper, from the British High Commission, has confirmed that the 24-year-old was serving on HMS Richmond, and said that his family in England had already been notified of the death.

MP Flick Drummond spoke of her sadness. She said: “This is terrible news, and my heart goes out to his family and colleagues.

“It reminds us what a dangerous job our armed forces do while keeping our country safe.”

The navy confirmed police are carrying out the probe, and said its thoughts were with Mr Warrender’s relatives at this sad time.

A navy spokesperson said: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm that Engineer Technician (Marine Engineer) Charles George Warrender from HMS Richmond was found dead in the Seychelles on Saturday.

“The next of kin have been informed and the thoughts and sympathies of the naval service are with his family and friends at this sad time.

“The incident is currently under investigation by the local police therefore it would be inappropriate to comment further.”

Local reports say Mr Warrender’s death came just hours after HMS Richmond welcomed President James Michel and other guests to celebrate the Queen’s birthday last Friday.

HMS Richmond is in the Indian Ocean as part of Operation Kipion – protecting Britain’s international interests across the Gulf.

She is set to leave the Seychelles on Tuesday.
