Speeding warning from town council for drivers in Horncastle
Drivers in Horncastle have been given a warning that their speeds will continue to be monitored by concerned councillors.
As revealed by the Horncastle News, alarming, new figures show that thousands of motorists are ignoring the speed limit on the town’s busy roads.
Data was collected by a reactive speed-monitoring device, installed by Horncastle Town Council during 2024 and 2025 at various locations where the limit is 30mph.
And they showed that, in some places, more than a third of drivers were found to be speeding, with some clocking double the limit.

Doubts have been raised that the device is old and ineffective because the data is disregarded by Lincolnshire County Council’s highways department.
But at the January meeting of the town council, members decided to carry on monitoring drivers in the hope that the device acts as a deterrent.
Town clerk Amanda Bushell said: “The council received the latest report on the speeding data and noted that the percentage of speedsters was high on some of the roads.
“It was agreed to continue putting up the reactive device, as well as passive signs, around the town, and to keep them while they are still working. No new locations to display the signs were suggested.”
The current locations, where the device and signs are displayed for a set number of days, include Boston Road, near Banovallum School, Spilsby Road, Accommodation Road, Lincoln Road, Low Toynton Road, Louth Road, Langton Hill and Steve Newton Avenue.
When similarly shocking speeding data was revealed in 2022, the then-council chair, Coun Fiona Martin, said: “The figures are quite horrific, especially when you look at the percentage of people speeding and the top speeds they are doing. It’s diabolical.”
An example of the latest figures showed that, on Boston Road, of 53,015 vehicles recorded in November, 23,381, or 37.1 per cent, were above the 30mph speed limit, with a highest speed of 72mph.
