The warning comes following 15 burglaries in the town over the past month, which police officers believe were targeted due to windows being left open and unattended or insecure windows and doors.

The crimes were committed at all hours of the day and in some cases, windows and doors were also smashed by criminals to gain entry.

Detective Inspector Dave Harrop from the Criminal Investigation Department says:

“While people have been enjoying the good weather others have been out looking for opportunities to break into homes and steal possessions.

“Over the last month all sorts of items have been stolen, from tools to jewellery and from cash to electrical items.

“Some criminals have been stealing anything they can get their hands on – some aftershave, tea and coffee and medciation have all been stolen.

“We are working hard to find the person or people responsible, but in the meantime please be alert and keep your home as secure as it can be.

"Please try to avoid leaving windows open especially those on the ground floor.”
