Cycling for Tall Ships challenge

For the third year running ten students from the academy will be taking part in a voyage with the Tall Ships Youth trust next Easter.

In order to take part in the challenge they must raise £3,000, and the students have been busy raising money for the last seven months.

And their latest fundraising attempt was certainly not one for the faint hearted.

They had to work as a team to cycle 220 miles - the distance between Maltby and Portsmouth, which is their port of departure for the trip.

So on Saturday the 10 cyclists got into the saddle to cycle 22 miles each at Maltby Leisure Centre. It took them 12 hours to complete their mammoth challenge, with two cyclists at a time on exercise bikes side by side.

Darren Clarke who is in charge of the voyage said: “The voyage is an opportunity for the students to learn how to sail, build self-esteem, achieve a target through work, to be self-sufficient and learn a wide range of new skills.”

The Tall Ships Youth Trust helps young people to realise their true potential through sailing, and takes over 3,000 people sailing every year.
