Cyclist killed on A1

Andrew Ridsdale from Mirfield in West Yorkshire, was pronounced dead at the scene and an investigation is underway.

The accident happened just before 8.55am this on the morning of Sunday 18th March.

The 43-year-old was taking part in an open time trial with Gainsborough’s Trent Valley Road Club.

Police said a heavy goods vehicle had collided with the bicycle on the southbound carriageway, around two miles south of Blyth.

The carriageway was closed for the afternoon from Blyth roundabout, to allow investigations to take place.

A spokesman from Trent Valley road club described the crash as ‘a tragedy’.

He added: “Our sincere condolences go out to his family. Rest In Peace Andrew.”

Co-ordinator of Notts-based cycling safety organisation RideWise Graham Hubbard advised cyclists and motorists to take extra care when driving down busy roads like the A1.

“If someone is set on cycling down the A1, then they should try to ensure that they do it at a time when there is less traffic,” he said.

“Beyond that, cyclists should just make sure that they keep to the side of the road, be as observant as they can and maximise their visibility.”

He added: “Motorists should make sure that they take regular breaks on their journey and always be sure to be carefully observant.”

No arrests have been made in connection with the crash but Notts Police’s crash investigation unit is appealing for witnesses.
