Darfoulds: Residents say speed limit on A619 is putting lives at risk

John Thompson and local residents are concerned about speeding on the A619 near Darfoulds Nursery. Houses near to the exit onto the A619.

Homeowners on the A619, which leads to Darfoulds Nursery, say the 50mph limit should be reduced to 30mph.

Locals have told the Guardian that it is only a matter of time before a serious accident occurs.

John Thompson, 74, said: “They come flying down that road.”

“It is very dangerous to pull out from Darfoulds Nursery.”

“There have been a few accidents on the road down the years.”

“It is very dangerous to walk on pavements.”

“Because it is a 50mph, a lot of people go 60mph, I think it should be made a 30mph limit.”

John, who has been married for 51 years, also said that a 20mph speed limit should be put in place on approach roads to the A57 Millhouse roundabout when motorists are within 100 metres of the roundabout.

“This would eliminate dangerous, fast moving vehicles and improve traffic flow,” John added.

“It is spiralling out of control.”

Following John’s concerns, the Guardian contacted residents within the area who also have concerns about the A619 speed limit.

Glyn Lewis, 75, of High Park, said: ”It is a death trap.”

“I have lived here for 34 years and it has always been like this.”

“People just are not aware it is a blind spot, I think it should be 30mph.”

“When I am trying to pull out, people just come waltzing down.”

Rebecca Doyle, 26, who is a shop assistant at Darfoulds Nursery and travels along the road everyday, said: “It can very dangerous.”

“There are a lot of elderly people living closeby so it is not good for them. Most residential areas are 30mph so this should be the same.”

Following the concerns by residents in Darfoulds, the Guardian contacted Notts County Council.

The highway safety team confirmed that over the last three years from 1st January 2011 to 30th June 2014, there had only been one reported accident.

Simon Taylor said: “There has only been one reported slight accident on the Notts section of the A619 – a single vehicle which lost control just after entering the county.

“It was not near the houses and excess or inappropriate speed was not deemed contributory by the police.”

“A formal Speed Limit Review which was carried out in 2009/10 showed that the mean speed within the 50mph zone of the A619 was 46.3mph.”

“The review recommended no changes.”
