AN ‘inspirational’ lady is going for gold after being nominated for a Guardian Rose to recognise her sterling coaching work with Welbeck Archers.

Club secretary Chris Gascoigne was surprised with the special award by new member Rachel Atkins at the beginners’ session in Welbeck on Tuesday.

Chris is an expert archer with 44 years of experience and coached two to Team Gold in the 2004 Paralympics.

The 65-year-old said she was touched to have been nominated for the Rose.

“I am really overwhelmed by this - I think it’s a really nice thing to do,” she said.

“I really get a buzz out of coaching people and seeing them do well.”

Chris and husband Keith formed Welbeck Archers in 1975 and seen the club go from strength to strength with member numbers booming over the years.

Chris said they have seen a particular upsurge in new members since the Olympics with people wanting to try something new.

“We formed Welbeck Archers after the club we went to in Mansfield closed down. We started with six members and now have 70 seniors and 18 juniors,” she said.

“Archery is something very different - it’s not an energetic sport like running but it’s a lot of fun and gets you thinking.”

Rachel, 45, who joined the Welbeck Archers in May this year, said Chris has made archery learning a ‘real pleasure’.

“I just wanted to do something to show the appreciation of all members for the brilliant work that Chris does,” she said.

“She really is a font of knowledge and I have learnt so much in the few months I have been going to the club.”

Rachel, who attends the weekly session with partner Harry and son Daniel, said Chris has a special way of teaching which makes the learning experience extra enjoyable.

“Chris has got a brilliant way with people - even when she’s telling you what you’re doing wrong, she never criticises you,” she said.

“She’s so much fun and makes the club a brilliant place to be.”
