Concerned members of the public initially contacted Humberside police about a dead animal at a property in West Butterwick.

Police attended the scene on Saturday morning and are satisfied after speaking to the owner of the property that the horse had died of natural causes some time ago.

But such was the concern of local residents who saw images of animals posted on social media websites that a large number visited the property to see if help was needed. Two dead ponies were reported to have been seen by villagers.

Police contacted the RSPCA and dog warden service ‘out of courtesy’ but claim there is no evidence of animals being mistreated at the site or that dogs running loose there pose any danger to the public.

It is understood that local residents have been worried about ‘pack dogs’ around the village for some time. One worte on facebook: “Hope we get the credit for standing strong. Local police were very supportive.”

Environmental services were asked to help with the removal of the dead horse.
