'˜Dedicated' Rose wins £1,500 and trip to the Houses of Parliament after helping breakfast club blossom

Rose Taylor, who leads New Leake Primary School’s breakfast club, impressed judges at this year’s Kellogg’s Breakfast Club Awards with her dedication and commitment to ensuring children get breakfast.

Rose walks to school every day, no matter what the weather, to help the club, which provides food to the school’s ‘premium pupils’ – those who may not have breakfast before school or who may come from more deprived backgrounds.

Rose was also awarded a trip around the Houses of Parliament along with the school’s executive head teacher Rowena Thompson, business manager Shirley Yarnell and five pupils from the school on London.

Rose said: “The smiles on the children’s faces make it worthwhile.

“New Leake Primary is such a lovely little school, and I find that being part of the school as their Breakfast Club Leader has given me the opportunity to be able to give something back to the local community. It is like being part of a big happy family and I thoroughly enjoy coming to work. It is not work, it is an honour to be part of such a wonderful village school.”

The £1,500 will be used to support and sustain the continuity of the Breakfast Club as well as enhance the facilities

The school boasts the benefit of Rose’s help at the breakfast club, with teachers seeing the positive effects on learning and all the children being ready for their school day.

The club includes special needs pupils and children who suffer from Autism and ADHD and Rose was said to help provide a calming and positive start to those who need it most.

The club also supports working parents who need to be able to drop their children off at school early.

Executive head teacher Rowena Thompson said the school was ‘very proud’ and was ‘fortunate to have such dedicated staff at New Leake School willing to give their all for the benefit of the pupils’.

“The award of Breakfast Club Hero is a fantastic way of recognising her efforts and her contribution to our school community,” she said.

“Rose is always cheerful and friendly with a smile on her face and is very welcoming and caring towards all pupils, parents and staff alike.”

Shirley Yarnell said the trip to London ‘was a very rewarding day, thoroughly enjoyed by the children who were able to attend’.

She said: “The children were particularly excited when we featured live on our local radio station, when they rang us while in the taxi in London on the way to the Houses of Parliament.”

MP for Boston and Skegness Matt Warman met the school and said Rose ‘thoroughly deserved’ her award.

“It’s clear that Rose has gone above and beyond the call of duty to help create a warm and welcoming environment for the children, staff and everyone involved,” he said.

“It was a pleasure to meet her at the reception to celebrate her success and hear more about how the club works.

“Breakfast clubs are a great way to ensure pupils have access to a healthy and balanced meal before school.

“This is a great achievement and I wish the school every continued success.”

School Food and Health Advisor and Kellogg’s Breakfast Club Awards judge, Lindsay Graham, said: “We know from the latest research that breakfast clubs like New Leake Primary can not only help give children a much needed good start to the day it also helps with the three ‘As’ attendance , achievement and attainment.

“It was inspiring to read the 2016 breakfast club award entries and see how children are being engaged and supported in learning beyond the school day.”
