Flights were to resume on Monday, according to the RAF College’s Facebook page and activity will be initially restricted to a series of aircraft sorties for flying instructors to remain safe, proficient and legally qualified to fly.

They explained: “For safe flying proficiency, our qualified pilots are required to fly, as an absolute minimum, every 31 days.

“These solo sorties will ensure individuals maintain their highly-specialised competencies, qualifications and skills to then conduct essential training to support our front line capability.”

Training of trainee pilots has not yet resumed.

The RAF College had suspended flights due to social distancing guidelines imposed by the government.

From March 25 the Royal Air Force suspended all displays from its various teams and bands until further notice.

Deputy Commander Operations Air Marshal Gerry M. Mayhew stated at the time that RAF personnel who could work from home should do so in order to stop the spread of COVID19.

“We must, operate safely, and in a disciplined manner. Unless your role is deemed to be essential to our key outputs, or for the COVID Support Force, and requires you to travel to your place of work, you should stay and work from home, protect the NHS and save lives. It really is as simple as that. And, where you must work in proximity to others, you must adhere to the clear Government instructions on social distancing.”
