Armed Forces Day continues to be marked in North Kesteven, albeit in a scaled down way.

While the usual celebration and presentation of Veterans Badges has had to be cancelled because of the ongoing coronavirus situation and the need for social distancing, the traditional flag raising ceremony continued in a much-reduced format in Sleaford.

At 10.30am on Monday, marking the beginning of the week that culminates in Armed Forces Day on Saturday, chairman of North Kesteven District Council Coun Susan Waring was joined by council leader Coun Richard Wright, the RAF College Cranwell Station warrant officer and the vicar of Sleaford, Rev Philip Johnson, to bless and hoist the flag on the district council office’s flagstaff.

With six people present, this was carried out in full compliance of social distancing requirements.

Coun Wright, an RAF veteran himself, said that despite the ongoing situation, responding to coronavirus and community need in respect of it, it was wholly appropriate that the contributions of the Armed Forces past, present and future was not overlooked at this time.

“As with all public services, our ever-reliable Armed Forces have proved themselves to be a secret weapon in the national response to the pandemic, as they are whenever they are called on in support of any emergency relief. This situation serves as a timely reminder of the broader benefits they bring to our daily lives here in North Kesteven and further afield, as they turn their skill and energies to support our health services and what is referred to as civil society.”

The distinctive flag will continue to fly all week.

Although the planned presentation of badges is on hold, would-be recipients can still apply for the recognition of their service. Badges are available to anyone of any age who has served for any duration in the Army, Navy, Air Force or Merchant Navy; as regular, reservist or on National Service. To apply to have a badge presented whenever it is possible, email [email protected] or call 01529 414155.

The annual children’s design competition to draw up a poster to help with the promotion of the Armed Forces Day events has also been impacted. Whilst the number of entries was diminished, a winner was chosen. There is also an Armed Forces Day design challenge in the recent NewsNK activity pages.
