Derbys: Absence rates continuing to fall across County schools

In primary schools, rates of persistent absence are 2.5 per cent compared to the national average of three per cent – a figure which shows the county has outperformed its neighbours.

Persistent absences in Derbyshire secondary schools stand at 6.2 per cent compared to 6.4 per cent nationally.

Figures released by the Department for Education show primary school total absence for the county for 2012-13 is 4.5 per cent compared to the national average of 4.7 per cent.

Absences in secondary schools are level with the national average of 5.8 per cent.

Coun Jim Coyle, the council’s deputy cabinet member for children and young people, said: “We’re pleased that the attendance figures in the county are better than the national average.”

“There is a strong link between attendance and attainment which is why we work closely with schools to make sure students don’t miss classes and parents and pupils understand how importance regular attendance is.”

“We will continue to work together to ensure this downward trend continues.”
