Doncaster staff and families complete Peaks challenge

Staff, and family members, of Doncaster-based firm Pacy & Wheatley recently undertook a mammoth challenge and completed The Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge.

The group raised a total of £4,081.93 for Bluebells Wood Children’s Hospice which they recently presented at the North Anston facility, in attendance were colleagues Anthony Wheatley, Craig Wheatley, Paul Coleman and Andrea Lilly.

Mandy, a corporate fundraiser at Bluebell Wood, took the group on a short tour of the building and they were introduced to some of the care team members, who work on a daily basis with children and young adults with life shortening conditions and complex medical needs.

A spokesman said: “Bluebell Wood has a very calming, friendly and fun-filled environment that gives children, along with their families and siblings, time to spend together at the toughest of times. The charity, which has to raise more than £3m a year to keep its doors open, is there to provide special memories for families. The building also has two end of life suites for families to stay together when their child has passed away.

“It made us realise the enormity of the task the Bluebell Wood undertakes each day. Mandy expressed her thanks on behalf of the children, their families, Bluebell Wood staff and volunteers for the efforts of each of the members of the 3 Peaks Challenge Team and to all of those who sponsored them.”

* The walk started at the Pen-y-Ghent Café at 7am after the group was provided bacon butties and tea/coffee by the P&W support team, some members had set off as early as 4am from Doncaster, others stayed over locally but still had a half our drive to the starting point for 7am.

The walk its self is a 25 mile walk up and over three peaks with long flat walks in between.

The first nine miles was over pen-Y-Ghent then a long flat walk to Ribblehead Viaduct, then 11 miles from the Viaduct with a long climb up Whernside and a steep, uneven descent down to the Old Hill Inn, the final five miles were a climb up and down Ingleborought with a long uneven walk back to the Pen-Y-Gent Café to complete.

Seventeen team members managed to complete the 1st peak, 15 members managed to complete two peaks and 11 members completed all three peaks.

The quickest team member finished all three peaks in just under eight hours and the last two people to come off the peaks in the dark arrived at the Pen-Y-Ghent Café at 8.30pm.

All team members were rewarded with a comforting meal and a bed for the night courtesy of Pacy & Wheatley.
