Don’t suffer in silence this Christmas

There has been a 16 per cent rise in reported incidents of domestic violence in the county during December and January as compared to previous months, in the last three years.

Incidents of domestic abuse tend to increase during the festive period as it is believed the increased financial pressures and spending longer periods of time with an abusive partner can create greater anxiety and stress, said a hotline spokesman.

A domestic violence survivor from Notts, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “Christmas is when you should be happy with your family and friends and not suffering violence or abuse.”

“I got away and I am a survivor. But he is free and I am not.”

“If you are suffering abuse or know of somebody who is don’t be frightened to get help.”

On average, one in four women and one in six men will experience domestic abuse at some stage throughout their lives.

Notts County Council supports the 24-hour Domestic Violence Helpline for women to ring if they need support or advice about domestic violence.

This year the Council is also working with the Crimestoppers Campaign to fund posters, leaflets and beer mats which are being distributed throughout the county to encourage people to report incidents of domestic violence anonymously by contacting the Crimestoppers hotline.

Councillor Mick Murphy, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: “Unfortunately, Christmas can be a time that families dread if they have a violent or abusive family member as they are together for an extended period.”

“Many families suffer in silence so if you know anyone who is a victim we urge you to let Crimestoppers know to help bring the violence and distress to an end.”

The council will be providing £912,626 of funding to support domestic violence support work in the county during 2012/13.
