East Midlands: Sports stars help Miller Homes pick a winning team

Miller Homes Midlands has unveiled the judges for its Summer of Sport competition, which gives local clubs the chance to win prizes of up to £1,000.

Twins Tom and David Bishop, both international triathletes, have represented Great Britain at numerous high profile competitions. This summer, they will be helping Miller Homes choose a sports club in the East Midlands to receive the prize money.

The competition, which runs until 31 August, is now in its fourth year and has already attracted a high number of entries from across the region.

To take part, entrants should pick up an entry form from their nearest Miller Homes development or download an application form at www.millerhomes.co.uk and tell the judges, in under 200 words, how their club will benefit from the money and what it will be spent on.

Tom and David, who are from Derby, began their sporting career at school where they were both keen swimmers and runners. They later developed a love of cycling and became triathletes in their teens. Since then, they have competed at events around the globe, securing many podium positions.

Alastair Parsons, sales director at Miller Homes Midlands, said he’s delighted that the twins will be judging the Summer of Sport competition.

“Tom and David are dedicated athletes with a bright future ahead of them,” he said.

“They understand that local sports clubs play an important role in the community nurturing talent and helping people to become more active. With their background, they are ideally placed to identify the clubs that will make the most of the prize money.

“As part of the judging process they will look at how clubs will make use of the cash, whether it be taking athletes to competitions or investing in training and equipment.”

Meanwhile, Tom said that he was pleased to support this year’s competition.

“Both my brother and I have benefitted from training with grassroots clubs so it’s great to be involved in something that gives something back. We’re looking forward to seeing the entries.”

Last year, Trowell Football Club in Nottinghamshire scooped the prize money, helping them to fund new kits and coaching sessions.

Chairman Anthony Beaumont said: “The grant has helped no end, as it was a real battle to maintain the kits and equipment whilst keeping fees to a minimum.

“The money has also been used to provide various coaching sessions for around 40 children in our Soccer School and Disability Squad. This is something we would have struggled to do without the cash from Miller Homes.

“I would urge any club to enter this competition; the whole community has reaped the rewards.”
