At a full meeting of the authority last Wednesday, Coun Makinson-Sanders asked: “Will torches be provided for councillors when fulfilling ward engagements after dark - or will the council be stocking extra miners’ lamps?”

Coun Leyland retorted: “I am extremely disappointed that you feel able to trivialise such a serious matter.

“I am also very concerned that your flippant comments will be seen by members of staff as insensitive and crass given the potential for job losses and staff reorganisation.”

He added: “We face uncertain times that need to be planned for.”
