Bonfire spreads to grounds of neighbouring school

Firefighters were called to a bonfire which accidentally got out of hand and spread to the grounds of a neighbouring primary school on Saturday evening (July 25).

The incident happened in a garden to the rear of Bambarino’s Italian restaurant and next to Grimoldby School in Manby Middlegate, Grimoldby, near Louth .

Four fire crews attended the blaze just after 7pm but the fire damaged some of the garden, burned through the fence and set alight bark chippings laid around play equipment at the school before the flames were brought under control.

Neither the restaurant or school buildings were affected by the fire that was at the back of the property.

A fire service spokesperson said: “There was significant damage to a number of car parts, timber sheds, fencing, trees and bushes.

“Investigations concluded that this originated from a controlled burn igniting refuse next to the fire.

“Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue advise against lighting fires under any circumstances, and especially so at this time of year where the ground is tinder dry and fires are starting and spreading extremely quickly.”

A spokesperson for the restaurant said the site has now been cleared and the business will still be open as usual.

The firefighters were also treated to food from the restaurant afterwards for their efforts, which was much appreciated.
