Ensuring school stays bully free

AN Anston school has been given an award for all the work it does to ensure classrooms remain bully free.

Sue Horton, the anti-bullying development officer for Rotherham schools, presented members of Anston Hillcrest’s school council with the anti-bullying gold award this week.

During the past year the school has taken part in a variety of activities to promote the school’s values - friendship, respect, unity, resilience, honesty and responsibility. Teacher Jacqui Swift said it is through these values that the message of anti-bullying has become embedded throughout the school.

The school took part in anti-bullying week in November last year, when it ran a poster competition alongside another school in the area.

Miss Swift said: “The children held anti-bullying class council meetings during this week where they discussed what they think we do well as a school to make sure that we are bully free, but also what else they feel we could do to continue our good work.”

“This culminated in a school council meeting where the children from each class fed back from the meetings held in classes and looked over the poster competition entries.”

“The meeting was attended by Mrs Hughes the school’s anti-bullying governor, parent Ashley Hill, a PCSO who kindly volunteered his time and advice to the children, and Sue Horton who was pleased to see the hard work that had gone into the posters that had been created.”

Miss Swift added: “From our initial work in anti-bullying week, anti-bullying has remained an important message at Anston Hillcrest, from the children in foundation who can say kind words about their friends to some children in year five and six who have, in their own time, created a script for an anti-bullying film that they have asked their class teachers if they can film during ICT lessons and show to the whole school.”

Headteacher Pam Ward thanked Sue for all her work at the school.

She added: “We are very proud of our children and the commitment they show to our school values. This anti-bullying gold award is a credit to them and all their hard work.”
