An order was introduced by the district council in 2017 under the Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014.

It allows the council to issue fixed penalty notices for £100 or prosecution to any dog owners who do not pick up after their

dogs and dispose of it appropriately.

The council is now consulting on the extension and variation of the Dog Fouling Public

Space Protection Order (PSPO).

It is proposing to be able to issue penalties to dog owners who do not carry with them the right means to pick up dog fouling (i.e. dog poo bags).

Coun Milne, Chair of the Regulatory Committee said: “The council understands that the majority of dog owners act responsibly and pick up after their dogs. However we do recognise dog fouling is an issue across the District and we are keen to ensure we have powers in place to deal with it.

“We are also seeking to extend these powers and ask dog owners to ensure they carry with them dog bags, or similar to demonstrate that when their dog fouls they can pick it up.

“We want to hear resident’s views on these issues and welcome responses to the consultation.”

Residents have until 9am on Monday, April 27 to take part.
