Councillors were told that remedial work to one memorial was necessary at a cost of £210.

After ascertaining that no family of the deceased wexist to help towards the cost, Coun Ros Whittaker asked what will happen with other stones that also need attention, some of which are damaged by vandalism.

She asked: “It does seem an awful lot of money to spend. Is there any other way of dealing with this?”

Chair Coun Bob Fish pointed out that the western side of the churchyard has been made good, with clearer access allowing people to walk behind memorials. Safety is paramount, he added.

It was agreed to repair the memorial in question and to investigate insurance for any vandalism in the churchyard.

Many gravestones are leaning and could be laid flat in the grass, and would look better as a result, said Coun Peter Davies.

The policy committee is to explore the best options for the future of stones withinthe churchyard.

Coun Don Stewart said insurance is needed as soon as possible or essential repairs could have to come from the taxpayers’ pockets.

It was agreed that town clerk Caroline McGuire should obtain insurance quotes to cover any damage committed in the closed churchyard, while the policy committee visits and investigates the state of individual gravestones and memorials there.
