Storm Goretti looming — yellow warnings and flood alerts for Lincolnshire

Residents across Lincolnshire are being urged to stay weather-aware as Storm Goretti approaches the UK, bringing a mix of snow, rain, freezing temperatures and strong winds this week.

Although the most severe weather is forecast further south and west of the country, the Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for parts of Lincolnshire as the system moves through. In Lincolnshire this includes snow and rain warnings which are expected to affect the county from Thursday evening into Friday. Forecasters say rain spreading across the region could turn to sleet and snow overnight, leading to slippery roads and travel disruption.

The storm — described by meteorologists as a multi-hazard event — has already prompted rare red and amber weather warnings elsewhere in the UK, including gusts of up to 100mph in the south-west and heavy snowfall further inland.

Locally, Lincolnshire authorities are also monitoring flood risk as rain falls on already damp and frozen ground. The Environment Agency has issued a Flood Alert for parts of the East and West Fen Catchwaters, including the Stonebridge Drain to the north of Boston, warning that higher river levels overnight could lead to flooding on low-lying land and roads. Residents are advised to avoid walking or driving through floodwater and to stay away from areas near rivers and drains.

The Lincolnshire Resilience Forum has highlighted that two separate yellow weather warnings — one for snow and one for rain — remain in place for the county, and that the UK Health Security Agency’s amber cold weather alert continues through the weekend.

However, this does not mean a snow day for the majority of the county’s school children, with only Somercotes Academy stated on the Lincolnshire County Council list of closures.

While most of Lincolnshire is not under the most severe national warnings, people are being urged to check for local updates, prepare for slippery conditions, and be ready for travel delays. Simple steps such as allowing extra time for journeys, checking forecasts, and ensuring mobile devices are charged can make a real difference as conditions evolve.

For the latest flood warnings and alerts, residents can sign up for notifications from the Environment Agency and monitor updates via the Met Office and local resilience websites.
