Wombles preparing for major operation to clear rubbish from Drainside South

The Wyberton Wombles group is planning to clear some of the fly tipping that has been removed from Drainside South.

Zoe De Cesare of the group says it is probably the most complicated project the volunteer group has attempted so far.

Items including a microwave, a fridge, tyres and numerous black bins full of rubbish have been scooped up from the dyke as part of the Drainage Board’s clearance of the drains.

The rubbish all needs removing now, and Zoe says a small group of volunteers, with the help of a local farmer with a digger and bucket, will be tackling it on Tuesday.

Zoe says some of the volunteers will be climbing down the banks with extended litter pickers and passing up items to be bagged up and then collected by the council.

She said: “Drainside South is a very picturesque area, but is unfortunatidely blighted by fly tipping as there are large parts not overlooked by any houses.

“One of the reasons we would like to highlight this, is the same issue will occur year after year unless the Drainage Board are able to clear the Drain before using the machinery OR until fly tipping can be prevented.”

There are now 850 wombles helping to clear up around the wider Boston area, and if anyone wants to offer their services to the group, they can go to the Boston Borough website and under "action it" go to the Litter Champion Application Form.
