Fake burglary man eviction

Rotherham Council evicted Steven Green from Wright Street, after he failed to move out of the property after the authority was granted possession in February.

In August, last year, Green reported that the combi-boiler, radiators and pipework has been stolen from his home.

He said the alleged burglary caused significant flooding damage, estimated at more than £6,000, to his own property and the flat below, causing the tenant to be rehoused in another area.

Police investigated and discovered that there was no forced entry into Green’s flat and that he had stolen the heating components himself.

Further investigations by Rotherham Council’s anti-social behaviour unit revealed that Green had been convicted of other offences in the neighbourhood, which had impacted on the local community.

In September, Green pleaded guilty to the theft of the boiler and associated heating components and two months later he was served with a Notice Seeking Possession and an application was made to Worksop County Court for possession of the property.

In February this year, possession of the property was granted in 14 days but Green failed to leave the property and court bailiffs evicted him on 20th March.

PC Rebecca Lindley, who works with Rotherham Council’s anti-social behaviour unit, said that council tenants who choose to commit crime do so at the very real risk of losing their homes.

She added: “Following the discovery of the boiler theft from the property, Green made claims to the investigating officers from the Dinnington Safer Neighbourhood Team that he had been the victim of a burglary.”

“However, the officers were able to prove that Green himself was responsible for the theft and when presented with the evidence he admitted this was the case.”

“The results of the criminal investigation led to Rotherham Council’s anti-social behaviour unit, which works in partnership with South Yorkshire Police, making a successful application to have Green evicted from his property.”
