Firefighter gets on his bike for 9/11 victims

A MALTBY firefighter is marking the tenth anniversary of September 11th by joining his American colleagues on a motorbike trip.

Crew manager Richard Barr joined hundreds of US emergency service workers on the annual trip from Chicago to New York.

A group of 33 firefighters flew out to America on Sunday. They left the Chicago Red Sox stadium on Tuesday and will arrive at Ground Zero, New York today for a special memorial service.

Some 343 firefighters and 60 police officers were among the thousands who lost their lives on September 11th 2001.

Richard said: “By the time we reach New York there’ll be thousands of us biking en masse into New York City.”

“It’s a real privilege to be part of such a huge event, and I’m sure the memorial service itself will be a very emotional occasion, especially for the New York firefighters we’ll be biking with.”

His route will take him from Chicago to Ohio, onto Gettysburg via the Flight 93 Memorial in Pennsylvania, then onto Washington DC, New Jersey and through the Brooklyn Tunnel to New York.

Memorial services begin at Ground Zero at the exact time the first tower was struck.
