Flypasts to commemorate Battle of Britain

Fighters from RAF Coningsby, including Spitfires and Hurricanes will be making flypasts of Burghley Park and Podington throughout this morning starting at 11.05am and culminating in a display over Buckingham Palace at around 11.45am

The RAF will perform an enhanced Changing of the Guard and a flypast in front of The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Duke of Cambridge and other members of the Royal Family.

July 1,0 1940 is thought of as the start of the Battle of Britain, with a series of Luftwaffe attacks on shipping convoys off England’s south-east coast.

A spokesman for the RAF said that on that day, the RAF shot down 14 enemy aircraft and severely damaged 23 more, according to the then Air Ministry.

Some 200 patrols were flown by RAF aircraft, involving 641 aircraft.

A post by RAF Coningsby’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight said: “Weather permitting, four Spitfires, two Hurricanes and four Typhoon jets will fly over Buckingham Palace at 11.45am on Friday, showcasing the RAF aircraft securing UK skies then and now.

“The flypast follows an enhanced Changing of the Guard by the Queen’s Colour Squadron, which begins shortly after 11am”

The Dakota is also set to make a flypast over Tibenham at 12.01pm.

The craft from RAF Coningsby are set to display over a number of places this weekend including a variety of Lincolnshire locations.
