Middies Chippy, located at the corner of Trinity Street and Portland Terrace, has been operating as Middies since the 1960s.

At that time it was run by Mrs Middie, whose full surname was Middleton, and was a Gainsborough institution.

At busy times, the queue would fill the shop and spill out into the street, sometimes as far as the side door in Portland Terrace.

Mrs Middie sold up and retired in the mid 1970s, and the shop was run for some years by the Cimadoro family, who maintained the quality and the custom until they passed the shop on in the mid 1980s.

Now owned and run by business partners Tony Wallace and Luke Croule, the business is still thriving to this day with the same focus on quality.

Tony said: “Our speciality fish is line-caught haddock, this is available daily and is cooked to order, and talking of ordering, you can phone an order in for pick up. We also take card payments.

“We also offer larger orders for local businesses, we even deliver outside our usual opening hours.

“We’ve recently been supplying specially wrapped suppers for a residential care home – the residents love a fish and chip supper done the old way. It’s a real nostalgia trip.”
