Free parking back in Skegness area

Free car parking is being reintroduced at Burgh-le-Marsh, two car parks in Alford and one in Spilsby, as well as six others across the rest of East Lindsey.

The news eases the blow of the new £2 charge for overnight parking on all paid for car parks (see page 6).

East Lindsey District Council’s controversial proposals to increase charges and cut free parking were announced in January 2013 and were intended to improve equality across the district while earning the council £400,000 extra a year.

Last year there was a call for urgent action in Spilsby to alleviate the problems of illegal parking by motorists refusing to pay the £3 all-day fee.

A legal notice will be published by the district council on Wednesday, March 16, announcing the change, which comes into effect 28 days thereafter.

The decision, which supported a recommendation made by a Council Scrutiny Panel, means the following car parks will provide free parking all day from April 13:

Boston Road, Spilsby; South Street Overflow, Alford;· Millers Way, Alford; Market Place, Burgh le Marsh; Sandilands, Sutton on Sea; High Street/Silver Street, Coningsby; off Market Place, Tattershall; Linden Walk, Louth; and Cattlemarket, Louth.

Leader of the council, Coun Craig Leyland, said: “We’ve listened carefully to the messages we’ve received from local people, the business community and town and parish councils and I’m pleased the district council is able to reintroduce free parking again in some of its car parks.”
