Friends’ awards honour

The Friends of North Leverton Windmill were invited to London to attend the English Heritage Angels Awards sponsored by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber.

They managed to get through to the final four in the category of Best Rescue of an Industrial Building or Site. The friends were presented with a certificate which will be on display at the windmill once all the repair work has been completed.

The millwright has been delayed due to emergency repairs at another windmill in Lincolnshire. But two new sails have already been made and are waiting to be delivered to the windmill.

The millwright was on site last week to measure the tower so that he can make a weatherproof cover.

This cover will keep the mill dry whilst the cap is off for repair. The millwright also did preparatory work on the cap. Weather permitting, the repairs to the cap will start before Christmas, said a Frends spokesman: “This will be the first time the cap has been removed from the windmill.”

The windmill has been busy grinding flour ready for the Christmas rush and will continue to do so whilst the repairs are being carried out. If required the mill can grind flour using our vintage tractor to turn a second set of stones to ensure a continuous supply of fresh flour.

The windmill’s Vintage Tractor Run, boasting Christmas music and fun, will be held on Sunday 11th December from 12noon.
