A company statement said: “It is with great sadness that the Directors of E. A. Bird and Sons Limited announce the decision to cease trading after 113 years.”

“As a family business that has employed and supplied local people for generations we feel proud to have sustained our business through many tough times, including two world Wars and now, due to the trading conditions being no longer viable, we close our doors for the last time.”

“Over the past few years it has become more and more difficult to compete with larger companies, and the ever changing high street, and although we have always prided ourselves with the quality of our products and the fact that we have provided jobs for local people since 1902, we can no longer sustain the business.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our staff, suppliers and customers past and present for their loyal and valuable support over the years.”
