Fury erupts after ELDC passes '˜90 home' application for Horncastle

The outline approval - by seven votes to two - paves the way for Lindum Homes to build up to 90 homes on a cereal field south of Banovallum Gardens, with additional access off Winceby Gardens.

No committee member spoke against the application but, following the vote, six members of the public expressed their outrage by shouting abuse - some of it couched in bad language.

They fear that the development will increase the prospect of Thunkers Drain flooding, particularly after heavy rainfall.

An additional concern is that Winceby Gardens residents, many of them elderly, will be put at risk, especially when crossing the road.

Speaking afterwards, Linda Trunkfield accused the committee of “being up their own a***s”.

She continued: “Only one of the members lives in Horncastle. They took no account of a 118-signature petition opposing the proposal.”

Mrs Trunkfield, of Winceby Gardens, said residents faced the prospect of noise, dirt and vibrations from the movement of HGVs during the four-year construction period.

Representing Lindum, Mark Foster said 27 of the units would be “affordable”, adding that the “clear advice” of Lincolnshire Highways was that the impact of increased traffic movement should not be sufficient to warrant are refusal.

Coun Richard Avison described the application as “a difficult one” but he was in favour subject to the properties to the north and east of the site being single-storey in keeping with the existing street scene.

Coun Tom Ashton said he was “incredibly encouraged” by a proposal to install a pedestrian refuge in the development.

“I see no real reason to refuse the application,” he added.
