Gainsborough: A new larger Lidl supermarket set to be built on the former car park site

The plans for a new supermarket in Beaumont Street will be twice the size of the current store in Ropery Road and will bring around 15 extra jobs to the town.

A Lidl spokesman said: “Lidl has operated a foodstore in Gainsborough, from its site at Ropery Road for over 20 years, and the existing building is no longer fit for purpose.”

“Working with Lincolnshire Co-operative, Lidl will shortly submit a planning application, to redevelop the Beaumont Street multi-storey car park, along with the adjacent retail unit occupied by Boyes and former Heaton Street Printing Works site.”

“It is proposed to redevelop the Beaumont Street site to provide a modern Lidl foodstore. The vehicular entrance to the site will remain as existing for the multi-storey car park and will be taken from Beaumont Street.”

“The service yard for Lidl will also be in the same location as the existing service yard for Boyes.”

“It is proposed that the Lidl foodstore will be located to the south of the site, with the car park to the north.”

“We believe that the proposal represents an exciting opportunity to redevelop the Beaumont Street site and provide an attractive, modern retail scheme, which will also include areas of landscaping, a pedestrian walkway through the site and new surface paving.”

The car park had been leased to the West Lindsey District Council by Lincolnshire Co-op. This lease expired on Saturday 4th July.

Spokesman for Lincolnshire Co-op, Emma Snedden, said: “Our aim is to enable the car park to be kept open until the wider development plans for the area come to fruition.

“While the necessary practical alterations are made to the car park for the changeover, it may be closed for a few days in July after West Lindsey District Council have vacated it.”

“This temporary closure will be kept to a minimum.”

“After the practical changes have taken place, it will operate as a barrier car park.”

“This means shoppers will only pay for the time they have used the facility for and there will be more flexibility. The charges will be competitive.”

“We’re in the final stages of negotiations with Lidl on the Beaumont Street car park site.”

“Subject to planning permission, Lidl plans to create a brand new store, larger than its current outlet on Ropery Road.”

“A footpath will go through the site, connecting Marshalls Yard to the rest of the town centre. The footpath will make the area easier for pedestrians to navigate – which was one of our aims for the site.”
