The Gainsborough cadets were among more than 150 female cadets from across the East Midlands and East Anglia who attended the event in Chetwynd Barracks in Chilwell.

It saw them complete a series of task including bridge building, command tasks and a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) challenge.

Among the Gainsborough cadets taking part were Chloe Richardson, Abigail Hackney and Lizzy Flitcroft, all aged 13.

Chloe said: “I’ve enjoyed meeting new people and doing all the fun activities.

Abigail added: “It’s been very challenging but fun and exciting at the same time.

“I think we worked well as a team.”

Lizzy said: Abbey (Abigail) had been speaking to me for a few months about how good cadets was so I thought I would try it out as well and I just love it.

“There are a lot more jobs in the engineers than I thought there were.”

The event was organised by Sgt Kate Dunscombe, an Army Reservist in 65 Works Group Royal Engineers, part of 170 (Infrastructure Support) Engineer Group.

She said: “The motto of the Army Cadet Force is to inspire to achieve and that’s what we’ve done.

“The aim of the weekend was to put females in the spotlight and show the opportunities available in army engineering whilst learning about the different career paths you can take.”
